So much has happened in the last year, and I’ve not chosen to give much focus to writing here, but rather have kept a video and image log. I will begin creating posts from these as the demand for my arms, and one handed typing decreases in the coming months.
Here’s a quick blurb from a FB response/thread I participated on today, to give a quick snapshot of our current focuses:
She more or less taught herself to read around age 4, and thanks to games like DragonBox, gets algebra and geometry concepts. Minecraft obsession has led to learning JS and general programming concepts, as well as learning how to use software to animate her creations.
We’ve gone through the “up to standards?” concerns, and always come out the other side with a renewed ability to see just all she’s taking in and developing.
We’re watching Crash Course Kids, Gravity at the moment. We go through these videos a few a day (adult topics too). Earlier we were reading about Fred’s day (Life of Fred) and collecting Lingots (Duolingo).
She writes books because she wants to. She paints and constructs stuff all day long. Plays video games, many of which require maths, reasoning, or abstract problem solving.
We look at everything she has interest in and does throughout her day and extrapolate the “conventional” subjects/topics she’s exploring, and fit them into an ongoing blog that tracks her progress. She is non-linear and we do not test, but can definitively show her progression and that she is learning what is relevant and necessary for her life. As she grows, the topics of interest and need shift along with her. So, while she won’t work out a long division problem the way we were taught and forced to practice a bazillion times over, she can work out the answer to a division problem she needs an answer to via other methods.
Cecily is pretty sure Quantonium is legit and thinks its effect is one she wants to harness for herself. Nuclear physics 101, here we come. 🙂 Thanks, Ginormica.
Who says unschooling renders lazy and narrowly educated individuals. Let me just begin with how much more she already knows than I did, before learning it with her….
