Lily learned how to alphabetize today. Over the weekend I rearranged her bookshelves, as she’d grown from one to two, and her books needed reorganizing. She was somewhat involved, but mostly just in the awareness and use of the final result of the effort.
Last night, she wanted her 3d glasses for a movie, and remembered her “Bugs” book had a pair in its cover. She asked me how she would ever find the book. I explained. She found it moments later. Today, I handed her a stack of books and asked her to put them away for me. She agreed and then, a moment later she called for me to come because she didn’t know how.
Lily knows the alphabet forward and backward, and understands the concept of splitting it into thirds (beg/mid/end). Within 30 seconds, because it was relevant and something she was inclined to be open to absorbing, she got the concept.
How many years/weeks/worksheets did I have placed in front of me in effort to drill these into me? How many people had the same and still cannot perform this simple task, under a given set of universal standards?
