Why Math is Actually Useful

Kala is working through the Life of Fred series for math, et al. She’s in Honey, which is the book that introduces domains and conditions to sets and unions. It also introduces long division.
She’s learning as she sees fit, with lots of external stimuli, and is discovering that she’s been doing extended division for years. Now, on paper, she wants to know why. Why bother, when she can do it in her head..
I asked why, why math, over and over. I also asked why the math worked as it does. I got no answers. No useful one’s anyway.
So, today, I decided to find a useful answer for her. What follows is just that.
