Sexism (Misogyny and Masculinity)
Perceptions
Men live shorter lives because they tend to die from accidental injuries acquired through activities viewed as fun. A
Men also may have shorter lives because they don’t tend to really care for their physical health, because it’s a sign of weakness. Loneliness is a contributing factor to certain physical ailments, as a result of emotional needs being unmet. The perception is that if you’re a “real man”, you don’t need anyone, including healthcare or friends.
The perception that “real men” don’t have feelings, or shouldn’t acknowledge them is a contributing factor to poor health, high stress levels, and potentially shorter life spans.
Toxic Masculinity
The narrow expectations of masculinity that society places on us, and that we place on ourselves. These expectations negatively impact men (and everyone). It is one of the root causes when men are psychologically aggressive, or commit domestic violence, sexual assault, or even mass shootings.
Unnecessarily limits the range of what men can be.
It puts a woman, or acting like a woman, in the pejorative sense.
A pejorative, or slur, is a word or grammatical form expressing a negative connotation, a low opinion, or a lack of respect toward someone or something. It is also used to express criticism, hostility, or disregard.

Steps for Improving Toxic Masculinity
Reflection: Discover where these ideas of manhood originated. Another idea that seems to help is choosing to actively listen and read what women have to say. Work to unlearn socialized norms that no longer prove useful to humanity.

Resolution: Improving and Benefit
The jokes we choose to tell and the characters we write don’t just reflect our cultural values, they have the power to influence them too.
Assumptions have real consequences. It’s useful to understand where they came from or why they exist, then do something beneficial with the newly acquired education.
