- Tinker Crate with Grandpa – they did the fiber optics constellations and the defy gravity game
Grandpa tuned the piano and Lily has become fascinated with not only playing but watching the mechanics. Today she stated she’s going to build her own. - She and grandma worked on basket liners, tiny bed covers, and a variety of other projects related to sewing and so forth. Lils tried the iron for the first time, discovered what Stitch Witchery is, and reportedly spent quite a bit of time observing and asking questions about the sewing machine and process. She also devised a labeling system for the baby’s baskets of clothing.Images forthcoming
- She was able to spend quite a bit of time with both grandparents while here this time, working on various projects, including getting the yoga trapeze/swing hung. I knew that thing would be a hit, but didn’t realize just quite HOW much fun she’d have with it. Every day, most of the day, she’s hanging, climbing, swinging on it. It’s great, she’s actually wearing herself out and is tired at night.Images forthcoming
You know the plethora of words we have scattered all over the fridge? The words are in French, Spanish, and English (and soon Italian, if I can get the set ordered). The words have been up there for years, and we make random sentences, play various games, and leave each other cryptic messages probably 3-4 times a week. Lily has been somewhat hesitant for most of the time we’ve had them there, as she didn’t really know the vocab and has this thing about “already knowing/being able to do something proficiently” before letting us see her even try… Well, a couple days ago, something interesting happened.
Lily brought one of the magnets down to me, the word printed on it was “dessine” and she stated, “This is where we get our word ‘design’ from, huh?! It means to draw, to design, and I’ll bet it sounds like design too!” She’s not far off, and I am intrigued and encouraged that she’s come up with such a connection that goes far beyond simply learning the vocabulary and using it somewhat properly in a sentence. She’s made a solid connection and it has solidified in her mind. But that’s not the best part, after that first interaction and connection, she’s been scouring the entire fridge the last two days, looking for more words that are either similar enough to English that she is discovering something in the way of a root, association, or similarity for remembering, and she’s also looking for the same words across all the languages, and likely combination. For instance, she showed me el gato and I responded le chat, and she responded hates the dog, while handing me el perro. I then said, “Let’s find le chien”, and she’d already picked up le canard, and started quacking. I think she finally gets why the collection of magnets so often cracks us up and leaves Russ and I (and visiting adults) rolling in laughter.
