Writing

We went to breakfast this morning; Lily was given a color sheet by the waitress.  She seemed very interested in the activities on the sheet, and deciding what she wanted to eat. She spent some time coloring in the various items presented, and then she decided to write on the “plate” (part of the coloring page).
I watched her.
She asked about the order of the letters, we used phonics and sounded out the word she chose to write.  She’s been able to read her name for probably 4 months, but aside from writing it for her while she’s observed, we’ve never explored her writing it.
I knew about her ability to write the letter “L”, as she started do that last summer, while experimenting with squares and other shapes.
Today, she didn’t stop at L.
I held my breath…

All of that, both colors, alignment, and all 4 letters are hers, and hers alone.  My hands were in my lap, eyes fixed, and breath waiting in anticipation.
When she finished, she simply stated, “That says Lily.”
Indeed, kiddo, it does.
