Last night I started reading Fairy Swarm to Lily. I haven’t tried reading her a chapter/novel like book from a tangible book copy before now. We read from an electronic device often before bed, or in the car, etc.. but this time, I had book in hand. She snuggled up next to me and as I read, she observed, asked for placemarks/where I was reading, looked at pics, and seemed to exhibit an interest I haven’t seen before. (She also happened to dig the story.) I’ve shared with Russ her response and hopefully he and I will both find plenty of future opportunity to read to her from novels such as these.
I borrowed quite a few books from DCPL a week or three ago and managed to let a few of them lapse on renewal, so I shared some of the materials with her last night, explaining that they had to be returned and that if she were interested in any of them, I’d try to resource from either our local library or otherwise. She zeroed in on Ivy & Bean, and decided to begin reading it. We needed to get some house supplies from Walmart, so decided we’d grab dinner and hit the store in Alamosa last night; she decided the drive to Alamosa was an ideal opportunity to explore this new book of interest (in spite of it already being dark out).
Her reading light remained on the entire drive to Alamosa, and as we arrived first at our restaurant, and then at Walmart, and finally commenced our return drive home, the book barely left her hands. She read 50 pages in under 90 minutes, while eating dinner and dealing with the dark in the car. She even informed us that it was really not ok with her to interrupt her reading, even to stuff hamburger in her face; she just had to keep reading!
