Writing All Her Own

Something just to share… Yesterday my daughter demonstrated her ability to write every letter. I didn’t know she could do this. I have not taught her. I have given her no worksheets with endless tracings and lines and practice. I don’t even have an app on her tablet (Android OS) that helps with this (thank you very much, if anyone can find one with print and cursive that is any good, and doesn’t expect the kiddo to draw in a given pattern, but just gives the letter to have replicated, I’d appreciate the heads up). The only “practice” app she has used is on the iPhone and as it requires she generate the letter in a certain way (start here, draw line this way, etc), she won’t use it.
So, turns out, even though I have done literally nothing to teach her how to write, she knows how. Numbers too. Yes, sometimes she makes them backwards, but she self corrects. Sometimes she writes the word from right to left.. and sometimes the letter right to left. But you know what? I figure she’ll learn to write in whatever manner suits her best as she develops. My responsibility, as I see it, is to make sure she watches me write while I explain why I generate the letters and sequence in the direction and order I do. I trust her intelligence to provide her with all the other aspects of the development of this particular skill.
