Bugz has taken to dressing herself almost exclusively now. That generally means as some character either from her imagination or from some external source she’s taken a liking to. Today she was a purple wind fairy.
She ate breakfast with us, and then disappeared to her room. About 40 minutes later, she emerged, dressed, and with lots to explain. (I don’t interrupt her explorations to check on her because I have the luxury of being able to hear her without her knowing it. It’s spectacular entertainment to sit on the steps or in the kitchen and just listen to her dialogues, her stories filled with details that she gives such life to. She speaks in different voices, each assigned to whatever character suits her. She uses whispers, shouts, expressions, intonation, and recall so vividly you’d never imagine the scene wasn’t occurring in our dimension.

Then, “Lunch please.”

I figure she might be inclined today to remain in her realm of fantasy and so I tentatively begin yet another project on the house (or rather, the completion of one I’ve been hacking away at – literally – for the last two weeks). With chisel and hammer in hand, pounding out the rest of the concrete hole necessary to house our media center, I watch her with the set of eyes that she still isn’t quite aware of….
My little bugger snagged Russ’s entire box of cheese crackers, openly I might add, and plopped herself down on the couch (in full purple wind fairy dress, including the sun bonnet and purple cheerleader, sequined outfit – not shown in the pic above, but not far from it) with said box of crackers and her Squishy Body book. This one – that her aunt and uncle (many thanks to Pat and Marion) sent her for Christmas. (Pat, I have got to send you the video of her opening your gift.. giddy delight! I promise, it’s on the list. I’ll send it.)
Anyway, she sat for 1 hour,17 minutes on the couch with the box of crackers in her lap (munching a few, but mostly using the box as a stand) and the book hidden behind it. She read that book over and over, focusing today on the liver.. And I quote – “It catches bad guys and lets the good ones go back into the bloodstream.”
She continues, “What happens if your liver isn’t doing its job? Well, that means trouble, that’s what it means. You can’t live if your liver doesn’t do it’s job. You’ll die. Dead. Your liver will end up dead too – UNLESS the body mechanics get there in time.”
She’s riveted. By the liver.

She’s also realizing more and more each day just exactly how much she can read, and just how much doing so lends to comprehension of stuff!!
Then, as if the hour long session were simply not quite enough, she requested Bill Nye. “Brain, please”. Then Blood. Then Bones.

“Dr. Pepper??”
She was looking for what he might have to say about, you guessed it, the liver.
